A Prayer for Patience While Waiting on God’s Perfect Timing
By Keri Eichberger

Bible Reading:
But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. - Romans 8:25

Listen or Read Below:

“I'm as impatient as anyone.” This contemplation surfaced in my mind following separate conversations with my two teens about the answers they were seeking. It was apparent from my outsider perspective that, as they anxiously sought clarity, looking to the Lord would soon guide and provide for them. And, more immediately, would offer peace by waiting patiently in the process. But truthfully, as I quickly realized in that moment, I am just as guilty of demanding answers and results, and right away. Because being unsure of what to do can unsettle me, a foggy path forward can frustrate me, and my natural tendency is to seek immediate, swift solutions. Though what I really need to be seeking is patience.

How about you? Is your inner spirit stirring for answers, action, or guidance? Maybe you sense unrest in a situation you think needs resolution, but that actually just needs an infusion of peace while you wait on the Lord. Because truly, if you could preserve patience as God’s plan unfolds, it would surely steady your shaken soul, smooth your scattered mind, and settle your unsettled heart. With patience, there would be more peace, thus more enjoyment of your moments of this very day. You would love that, you long for that.

God’s word reminds us that if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. And though it’s hard to hope for what we don’t yet have, that we don’t know will be, what can give us solid hope is what we do know will be. And we do know that God is good and his goodness will follow us. We know that the Lord provides, and his provision will come at the perfect time. We may not seem to have these things yet, but we know we certainly will. God and his promises are our hope. Our only unfailing hope. And as we place our hope in him, and let that bright hope flow through every thought and fiber of our soul, we will find more peace-filled patience to wait on him.

When our souls are swelling with discomfort and uncertainty, we pine for peace and for patience. And we can have it when we place our hope in Jesus. When we present our hearts and requests to him. And when we thank him for what he promised to do—watch over us, provide for us, answer us, and give us peace. Let hope fill your heart. And give God gratitude for any and all patience he presents in the process. That he is offering now, and will always offer. A patience that can light up our lives with the peace we long for… while we wait for the Lord… to unfold his good and perfect plan.

You and I can certainly wait patiently, because our hope is in an unfailing, faithful God. In his unfailing and perfect provision, and in his unfailing and perfect plan.

Let’s Pray:

Lord God,

You are the God of all hope. And all my hope is in you. So often I seek answers, solutions, and change in a world that rattles me with confusion, questions, and temptations of more and better. But more than I need to scurry and stress what to do and what hasn’t yet happened, I need patience to wait on you. I find patience when I place my hope in you and your promises. The promise that you have good plans for me, and that you will guide me and provide all that I need at just the right time. Lord, I pour out my praise for your love and the patience you offer that presents precious peace and joy all through my life.

Thank you, Jesus. In your wonderful name, Amen.

What do we do when God no longer feels as close as He used to feel?

Many sincere believers experience seasons when prayer feels empty, Scripture feels quiet, and God seems strangely absent. For leaders especially, those seasons can feel confusing, discouraging, and even shameful.

In this episode of the Unhurried Living Podcast, Alan Fadling sits down with theologian and spiritual formation professor Kyle Strobel to discuss the new book When God Seems Distant, coauthored with John Coe.
