In a World of Shadows, How Can I Share the Light of His Love?
"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life'" (John 8:12, NIV).
The inky blackness of the sky envelops me as I gaze into the night. The darkness far from the chaotic city feels eerie. I am a bit uncomfortable with so little light. I’m drawn to the peace that is here, yet a bit frightened of the dark too. Being able to see helps dissipate uncertainty and gives me the illusion that I have control. Brightness is what I know, where I feel most comfortable and seen.
It’s not completely black, for there in the dark sky is the shining moon. Glowing bright, casting light. I reflect on what I know about this enormous orb. While it appears to be shining, it isn’t. It’s simply reflecting the sun. With no capacity to create light, it’s only a surface for sunlight to bounce off of.
The moon and me — in that way we’re the same. In my own power, I have no capacity to create light. Yet Jesus makes it clear that He is the source of all spiritual light and love:
"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life'" (John 8:12).
In a world that shouts “be seen” and “follow me,” I’m tempted to try to create my own light so others will see me. Jesus says that’s not my purpose, not why I was created. He is the light, and He calls me to reflect Him: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16, NIV).
To glorify my Father and overcome the temptation to make my day, my life, about me, I can choose to consciously shift my thoughts and focus. Making a choice to soak in the sunlight of my Savior and His love for me infuses me with light so I can shine for Him.
How might I practically mirror the love of the Father to someone today? When I see the unsheltered person, will I look them in the eye, giving them the dignity of one who is loved, or will I walk by?
While checking out at the store, will I put down my phone and offer a word of encouragement to the one serving others?
As I listen to the lonely person, tuck a little one in bed, or call my elderly parent, will I give them my undivided attention, even as the Father gives me His?
With Jesus' power, I can.
Jesus, show me how and where to shine Your love today. Like the moon, may I reflect You as the Light of the World. Today, in my thoughts, words, and actions, empower me, Holy Spirit, to glorify my Father in heaven and not myself. In Jesus’ name, amen.
OUR FAVORITE THINGS
Sometimes life leaves us carrying questions we wish had easier answers. Why am I still so afraid? Why does this struggle keep coming back? Is there more happening here than what I can see? God isn’t intimidated by those questions, and His Word doesn’t leave us without Truth to stand on. In Season 14 of Therapy & Theology, Lysa TerKeurst, Dr. Joel Muddamalle, and Jim Cress talk honestly about spiritual discernment, trauma, the armor of God, and the battles we face — helping us separate truth from fear and live with greater confidence in Christ. If you’ve been carrying some hard questions of your own, start listening to Season 14 of Therapy & Theology here, and let’s keep bringing them back to the Truth we can trust.

FOR DEEPER STUDY
Ephesians 5:8, "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light" (NIV).
Philippians 2:15, "so that you may become blameless and pure, 'children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.' Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky" (NIV).
Isaiah 60:1-3, "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the LORD rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn" (NIV).
Choose one of the above passages to meditate on. Ask the Holy Spirit for one space where you can reflect His light today.
Make a list of sources of light, such as candles and lamps. As you reflect on each item, think about how or where it obtains the power to create light. What can this tell us about ourselves and our own spiritual light? Share with us in the comments!
