Preparing Your Heart and Mind for the Work Ahead - iBelieve Truth: A Devotional for Women - August 30, 2026

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do--Ephesians 2:10

Although it may take years for us to recognize what God has prepared us to do, we can trust that God is preparing us for the work ahead. His word tells us that He has prepared good works in advance for us to do, and it’s remarkable how God is at work behind the scenes in our lives, lining things up for us, with some of us having literally no idea at all. Also, it’s amazing to think that God prepares and sets things up for us even before we are born, as explained in the life of the prophet Jeremiah, as Jeremiah 1:5 describes, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

God’s Providence

While many believe in fate, as Christians, we believe in the providence of God and His hand at work in our lives. The following are just a few biblical examples of Him preparing individuals’ hearts and minds in advance for the work ahead.

• Many biblical scholars believe it took Noah 120 years to build the ark, suggesting that God gave him ample time to prepare his heart and mind for the coming flood.
• Joseph believed God had more for him, yet he spent years as a slave and in prison being prepared for his God-given dream destiny.
• Jonah spent time in a big fish, which helped God to prepare his heart and mind to preach a message of repentance to a wicked city.
• Daniel spent hours in prayer, preparing him to face the lions in their den.
• As a shepherd boy, David didn’t dream of being king. Yet, God was spending one-on-one time with him out on the fields, preparing his heart and mind to fight for, protect, and lead His people.
• Abigail spent years married to a difficult man as God prepared her heart and mind to negotiate and be a peacemaker when it mattered most.
• The priest, Zechariah, spent years praying, growing older in the process, as God prepared his heart and mind to be entrusted with the role of father of John the Baptist.

Leading Us in Preparation

As seen in the lives of biblical men and women, God prepares our hearts and minds in various and unique ways for the work ahead of us, with some of us having rougher and more difficult pathways. For some individuals, God’s preparation of our hearts and minds takes months, years, and even decades, as the work ahead of us varies according to His purposes and plans. God is so patient with us, letting us slowly mature in our faith, going through ups and downs along the way, maybe even getting off-track a bit at times.  He gently leads us, directing our steps, even though we often think we’re the ones directing them. As Proverbs 16:9 describes, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”

Recognizing God’s Gentle Leading

We can trust God is preparing our hearts and minds for the work ahead, even if we don’t realize it now. He’s gently leading and guiding us, and we are following, whether we’re very aware or relatively clueless.  Although the Bible warns against looking back at things we’ve left behind, it’s okay to look back to see where we’ve come from and where God is leading us. God urges us in 2 Timothy 4:2 to be ready in all seasons to “Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.” Jesus calls us to prepare ourselves for the work ahead by training our minds not to worry about how we’ll accomplish things in the future, but to trust God to help us when the time comes, as He instructs in Luke 21:14, “But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.”

Let’s pray...

Dear Father,
Prepare my heart and mind for the work You have ahead for me. Help me to recognize Your gentle leading and the plan you have for me.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
