Kick Off Your Summer with a “Little Bit” Party!
Homeschool
Audio By Carbonatix
When we wrap up another homeschool year, it’s easy to just close the books and breathe a sigh of relief. But over the years—from graduating seven of my kids to now homeschooling my youngest three in high school—I’ve realized that the transition from “school mode” to “summer mode” deserves a little celebration.
Back in 2012, when our daughter Alyssa was just a toddler, my husband John came up with a brilliant, low-stress idea to celebrate the season: The “Little Bit” Party. It was such a hit then, and it’s still one of the most requested traditions in our house today. Whether you have toddlers or teens, this is the perfect way to kick off your summer break!
What is a “Little Bit” Party?
The concept is wonderfully simple. You create a dinner menu made up of various foods—some healthy, some “fun”—and serve the kids just a “little bit” at a time. The magic is in the mystery; the kids have no idea what is coming next!
Each item is served as its own “course.” Once all the courses have been served, they can have more of their favorites. It turns a regular dinner into a high-stakes culinary adventure.
Setting the Scene: Decorations & Plates
Since this is a celebration of “little bits,” lean into the theme!
- Miniature Decor: Use small items like dollhouse furniture, tiny figurines, or tea-party sets as centerpieces.
- Muffin Tin Service: Instead of large dinner plates, serve the “little bits” in mini muffin tins or on appetizer-sized plates. If you want to be extra festive, use colorful cupcake liners to hold each food item.
- Personalized Menus: Create a “Mystery Menu” where the items are listed with silly code names. For example, buttered noodles could be “Golden Twists” and applesauce could be “Cloudy Orchard Mash.”
- Summer Kickoff Colors: Use bright yellows, sky blues, and vibrant greens for your napkins and tablecloths to signal that summer has officially arrived.
The Mystery Menu
The best part? You don’t have to go to the store! You can shop your own pantry. Here is a sample menu to get you started:
- The Crunchy Start: A few cheddar rice cakes or goldfish crackers.
- Fruit Medley: A tiny scoop of applesauce or three grapes.
- Protein Power: Two or three bites of grilled chicken or a slice of turkey.
- Warm Comfort: A small forkful of buttered noodles.
- Garden Green: A single broccoli floret or a “baby” carrot.
- Sweet Surprise: A granola bar bite or a tiny square of chocolate.
- The Grand Finale: A mini cupcake or a spoonful of pudding.
Party Games for Extra Fun
Between courses, or once the meal is finished, keep the energy high with some simple games:
- The “Tiny” Scavenger Hunt: Give the kids a list of tiny things to find in the backyard—a small pebble, a tiny leaf, a blade of grass.
- The Big Summer Bucket List: While everyone is enjoying their final courses, grab some markers and a large poster board. Have everyone shout out one “little thing” they want to do this summer (like “eat a popsicle” or “run through the sprinkler”).
- Blind Taste Test: Have the kids close their eyes and try to guess a “little bit” of a mystery food item by taste alone.
Embracing the Rest
As we transition into these summer months, let’s remember that our work as parents and educators isn’t just about the grades or the completed workbooks. It’s about the memories we build. In Psalm 107:9, we are reminded: “For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.”
Summer is a time for our souls to be filled with rest, laughter, and a “little bit” of extra fun.
A Prayer for the Summer Kickoff
Dear Lord, thank You for bringing us through another school year. Thank You for the growth we’ve seen in our children and the grace You’ve provided for every lesson. As we step into these summer months, help us to find rest in You. May our homes be filled with laughter and our hearts be filled with Your peace. Protect us in our travels and help us to cherish the “little bits” of joy You scatter in our path every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Ready for a New Chapter?
Sending our kids out into the world is one of the hardest acts of trust we face as parents. We spend years praying over them, guiding them, and hoping they make choices that honor the Lord. When it comes time for them to take that next big step toward college, that surrender feels even heavier. We desperately want our children to step into a community that nurtures their faith rather than tears it down.
That is exactly why I am so grateful for Colorado Christian University.
At Colorado Christian University, they offer more than just an outstanding education. They provide a steadfast foundation of biblical truth. Their professors are committed to mentoring students and helping them view their choices in career paths through the lens of a Christian worldview.
