Stop and Notice

I finally found out what it takes for an advertisement to get my full attention. I drive down the road just like you do and see the 50-100 billboards on the side of the highway as I pass. But even though I technically see the billboards, most of the time, I don’t notice them. The other day, I passed a billboard that was upside down. Maybe you’ve seen it, or one like it. It isn’t a broken billboard or a massive mistake; It’s a design created to catch your attention, and they thought the best way to make people notice would be to make the whole thing upside down. And I couldn’t help but notice it. I found myself thinking, “Wow; It took an upside-down billboard to get my attention.”

Sometimes in family life, it takes an upside-down situation to make you notice your family. In fact, that’s a common refrain from parents and spouses after a family dynamic takes a turn for the worse. In those moments, people often realize just how much they’ve taken for granted when it came to their family life. Let’s not fall into that pattern to the point where it takes a terrible, upside-down moment to make us notice our families and appreciate the people around us.

Instead of waiting for things to be upside down before we notice what’s going on, let’s take some time to appreciate the people we love. Even if their response isn’t over-the-top gratitude and surprise, I can assure you that they will deeply appreciate being noticed and valued. If we think about it for a moment, we could all really use that kind of affirmation and support. So, let’s be intentional about giving it to the people around us! When we do, it will positively impact their outlook on life, draw us closer as loved ones, and help us to win more often at home.
